Skull 3D printed from a scan of Inostrancevia alexandri — the saber-toothed apex predator of Late Permian Russia, and the largest gorgonopsian that ever lived!

This one is older than the dinosaurs. Inostrancevia hunted 254 million years ago, some 25 million years before the first dinosaur walked, and it isn't a reptile at all — gorgonopsians are therapsids, stem-mammals sitting on our own branch of the family tree. A bear-sized predator with 6-inch saber canines, wiped out in the end-Permian extinction, the worst mass extinction in Earth's history.

The scan comes from the historic cast of the holotype skull, produced in Warsaw between 1908 and 1914 under the supervision of Vladimir Amalitsky, who excavated the original on the banks of the Northern Dvina River and named the animal in honor of geologist Alexander Inostrantsev.
