Here's the thing most people get wrong: Dimetrodon is not a dinosaur. It died out around 272 million years ago, roughly 40 million years before the first dinosaur appeared, and it's a synapsid — the same lineage that eventually produced mammals. It's closer to you than it is to T. rex.

Its name means "two measures of teeth," a nod to the differentiated teeth in its jaws: stabbing canines up front, shearing blades behind. That heterodont dentition is an early step down the road toward mammal teeth, and you can see it clearly in this skull. Tall, laterally compressed, with high-set eye sockets and the single temporal opening that defines the whole synapsid line.

Most fossils come from the Red Beds of Texas and Oklahoma, with later finds in Germany.
